Effective order strong stability preserving RungeKutta methods

We apply the concept of effective order to strong stability preserving (SSP) explicit Runge–Kutta methods. Relative to classical Runge–Kutta methods, effective order methods are designed to satisfy a relaxed set of order conditions, but yield higher order accuracy when composed with special starting and stopping methods. The relaxed order conditions allow for greater freedom in the design of ef...

Runge-Kutta methods and renormalization

A connection between the algebra of rooted trees used in renormalization theory and Runge-Kutta methods is pointed out. Butcher’s group and B-series are shown to provide a suitable framework for renormalizing a toy model of field theory, following Kreimer’s approach. Finally B-series are used to solve a class of non-linear partial differential equations.

Phenomenological Renormalization Group Methods

Some renormalization group approaches have been proposed during the last few years which are close in spirit to the Nightingale phenomenological procedure. In essence, by exploiting the finite size scaling hypothesis, the approximate critical behavior of the model on infinite lattice is obtained through the exact computation of some thermal quantities of the model on finite clusters. In this wo...

Microstructure, Renormalization, and More Eecient Vortex Methods

The small-scale structure of the ow produced by vortex methods is discussed, and contrasted with the small-scale structure produced by grid methods. Particular attention is paid to the proliferation of vortex hairpins in three dimensions; its origin is analyzed, a statistical description is given, and methods for harmlessly deleting unneeded hairpins are suggested. These methods involve renorma...

Renormalization group methods for nonlinear parabolic equations

Renormalization group (RG) methods are described for determining the key exponents related to the decay of solutions to nonlinear parabolic differential equations. Higher order (in the small coefficient of the nonlinearity) methods are developed. Exact solutions and theorems in some special cases confirm the RG results.
